To ask a security guard to work without their cell phone is like asking a marathon runner to race without feet- impossible.
Let’s be real, we all need access to our phones. The mobile phone is as much a part of our daily lives as an organ like your kidneys or heart. I am being serious.
Today’s culture is in constant contact, not just for social media but for professional reasons.
Our phones are real-time access to what matters most to us like friends and family. That connection has become a contributor to our mental health. The mobile phone allows us to have these connections.

As a security guard, human resources may ask you to email them a document or to respond to company updates that were sent through email. Companies have online training that is accessed through the mobile phone to include, clocking in and out of shift duty.
To say the phone cannot be used at work is nonsense.
As for covering a shift, how can you expect a security guard to work all day guarding a post lost in their thoughts while on duty. This will lead to boredom and complacency. This is hard and not very realistic with today’s culture.
The ability to call a family member or friend allows the guard to pass the time- more importantly, the guard may feel not so isolated at the post.
